“The Purple Carrot sign-up process is easy and straightforward. All you need to do is choose your plan, fill out your shipping and payment information, and then you can customize your box. Each week, Purple Carrot provides 12 dinner options to choose from, and it’s easy to change the default selections to the meals you want.
“One downside is that I wasn’t able to select my desired delivery date, so my deliveries automatically arrived each Wednesday.
“There was a good variety of meals to choose from. Because everything is plant-based, there isn’t as much variety as there would be if it could include animal products, but I loved how many options Purple Carrot provided for me as a vegetarian. They varied the protein sources (including beans, tofu, tempeh, and veggie burgers), vegetables, grains, and flavors.
“[I tried] the Coconut Tofu, Potato Malai Kofta, Za’atar Spiced Tempah, Green Curry Noodles, and General Tso’s Tofu.
“The ease of cooking varied depending on the meal. For example, some vegetables came already chopped, while others didn’t. Some meals required extra steps like blending the ingredients in a food processor, while others were simpler. However, I generally found the instructions to be clear and easy to follow. I also liked that most of the ingredients were pre-measured and ready to go.”

“Daily Harvest is a convenient and time-saving way to round out your diet with more vegan-friendly, organic, and gluten-free snacks and meals.”
“For the most part, all items are easy to prepare and are generally very tasty. Certain items, like the Harvest Bowls, may not maintain their texture well after reheating, while other items, such as the smoothies, are difficult to remove from their containers and somewhat challenging to fully blend.”
“I found myself feeling hungry still after many of the meals, and many items are relatively low in protein, so it might not be filling enough for some people.”
“However, Daily Harvest is affordable, offers a good variety of items, and has a flexible ordering process, so it’s easy to try different items to find what works for you.”

“The meal selection process was straightforward, and I was impressed by the large number of veggie bowls to choose from. I had a hard time narrowing down my selection. The pizza options are a bit more limited, though they were all quite different from one another.
“My meals arrived on time and in good condition. While they aren’t large boxes, depending on how many you order, they can take up a decent amount of freezer space. I found that my drawer freezer in my kitchen didn’t have quite enough space because I already had some bags of frozen vegetables and prepped meal items for my kids. Luckily I have a large chest freezer in the garage, which was perfect for housing these meals.
“The veggie bowls were easy to reheat in the microwave. I was apprehensive about the plastic film (I’ve tried other prepared meals where the film was nearly impossible to remove without scissors after reheating), but I had zero issues removing the full plastic film with these. The pizzas took a bit longer (and wouldn’t be ideal for bringing to work or school) because they require reheating in the oven.
“My feedback on the noodle dishes is consistent across the options I tried. I was overall impressed by the number and serving size of vegetables included in each dish. I also liked that there was a variety of plant-based protein options on the menu. The texture of the grains and noodles was great. I found most of the vegetables to be on the softer side (though not mushy), with some, especially the green beans, tasting a bit watery after being reheated. However, the tofu was the biggest disappointment. I found all of the tofu to have an almost spongy-like consistency that was super watery when I bit into it. As noted earlier, I think this is due to the tofu being roasted and then frozen. I’d be curious to try a dish where the tofu was steamed instead to see if it would hold up better.
“As for flavors, all of the dishes I tried were very flavorful, though the flavors didn’t always match my expectation. For example, the BBQ Mac & Cheese didn’t have a traditional smoky, BBQ flavor. It also wasn’t very creamy or cheesy. Instead it was quite spicy and had a thinner sauce. Again, I enjoyed it, but it wasn’t what I was expecting.”
“The pizzas were also interesting in that they’re two servings each. When I first opened the box, I was surprised by how small the pizzas were. However, once I started eating them I fully understood why: they are VERY rich (in a good way) and I did find that I had about 1/3 of a pizza left to munch on the next day. The Spinach and Artichoke Pizza in particular was one of my favorite items that I tried.”

“I tried a variety of Fresh N Fit meals, which were selected for me by the company. However, looking at the website, I think it’s well-designed to make it easy to find meals that fit your desired dietary pattern.
“The meals arrived in good condition and were compactly packaged, making them easy to stow away in my fridge. Reheating them was also a breeze, though the plastic film was impossible to peel off. Instead, I had to use a knife and still couldn’t remove all of it.
“While the textures of the ingredients were fine (nothing was overly soft, mushy, or dry), I didn’t find the meals to be particularly satisfying. The vegetables and proteins were either under or over-seasoned, and the flavor and ingredient combinations weren’t creative enough for me to feel like I was eating something that I couldn’t easily make myself or find for cheaper somewhere else.
“Overall, while I like how easy it is to find meals for certain dietary patterns, I think there are better options out there, such as Factor or Trifecta.

“I first tried Blue Apron over 10 years ago in college, and I remember really liking it at that time, though it was too expensive to keep up with on a college budget. Trying it this time I was happy to see that the quality of the ingredients hadn’t gone down. All of the ingredients were in good condition and seemed fresh upon arrival.
“While I didn’t love all of the plastic packaging, I did appreciate that the salmon was vacuum-sealed and that the chicken was packaged in two layers of plastic to prevent juices from seeping out. The meals were mostly easy to prepare, though I didn’t love the order of operations with the mashed potatoes dish.
“Overall, I think the service is a good option if you aren’t trying to follow a special dietary pattern. Still, Green Chef and Sunbasket stand out as being a bit better as I found their menu options to be more varied and featured more creative flavor combinations.

Comparing the best plant-based meal delivery services
Below is a table comparing the meal delivery services in this article by price, menu options, delivery frequency, and customization.
How to choose the best plant-based meal delivery
First, people must decide whether to receive meal kits or ready-made meals. Meal kits allow customers to prepare and cook their meals, while prepared meals usually require only heating.
Meal kits can help people new to cooking in general or just starting on a plant-based diet to learn some of the basics. Some people may also prefer cooking their meals.
One benefit of choosing a meal kit service is that the kits often come with reusable recipe cards. Once a person learns a recipe, they can cook it again using the printed card. However, most meal kits require a person to have a well-stocked pantry.

People should also select a service that offers dietary accommodations if they need to avoid certain ingredients because of an allergy or another health condition.
Those with strong moral reasons for following a vegan diet may prefer to choose a company that offers only plant-based meals and no meat options. However, people who also need to accommodate meat eaters in their household may prefer a company that offers both vegan and nonvegan options.
Pros and cons of a plant-based diet
Following a plant-based diet may offer a range of health benefits. However, there are also health risks to consider.
People on a vegan diet completely avoid eating any animal products or byproducts. Although vegetarians may still eat dairy and eggs, vegans avoid these products.

Many people eat a vegan diet because they have concerns about animal welfare or the environment. Others believe that a plant-based diet provides certain health benefits.
Some of the potential health benefits of a plant-based diet are:
Improved heart health: Research has linked a plant-based diet with a lower risk of heart disease. According to the American Heart Association (AHA), a diet low in saturated fats and cholesterol — such as a vegan diet — may reduce stroke and heart disease risk.

The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics has stated that a carefully planned plant-based diet can be “nutritionally adequate.” However, without planning, it is possible to develop deficiencies in specific vitamins and minerals when eating a restrictive diet. People eating a vegan diet may wish to be conscious of the risk of deficiency.
